I installed/reinstalled PocketTV Enterprise Edition and my key does not work anymore!

Just start 'PocketTV Pro' on your device and select 'PURCHASE' in the PocketTV Menu. There should be a URL displayed under the 'Enter Key' box. Just go to this URL to get a new key, if needed. The URL should be:
  • www.pockettv.com/key2 (for all recent versions of PocketTV Enterprise Edition)
  • www.pockettv.com/key (for some older versions of PocketTV Enterprise Edition)
You will need your TransactionID received from the Vendor when you purchased PocketTV. The TransactionID is the same as your Order Reference Number, OrderID or Order/Part #. If you lost, forgot or never received your TransactionID, click here.

I received a new Pocket PC Phone, and i cannot get a key that works on it!

The first thing you should try is to get a new key (see this FAQ article).

If that new key still does not work, maybe that's because your new phone is a Pocket PC Phone, while your old phone was a Smartphone.

If your previous phone was a Smartphone (i.e. no touch screen) and your new phone is a Pocket PC Phone (i.e. with touch screen), this is a 'normal' issue:

You originally purchased PocketTV Enterprise Edition for Smartphone, which is not the same product as PocketTV Enterprise Edition for Pocket PC (prices are different and keys are not the same for each).

If you contact us (using this contact form) and provide us all the information required in the contact form, we will be able to upgrade you so that you can get a key that works on your new Pocket PC Phone, at no extra charge.

I purchased PocketTV but I have not received my key, Send me my key!

The code that you enter must be the code displayed by PocketTV when you select Register in the PocketTV menu.

Do not use the code from the dialog indicating that you should purchase PocketTV! You should pass this dialog by tapping 'ok' (unless you use PocketTV for commercial use, in which case you should purchase it).

Select 'Register...' in the PocketTV menu to see the registration code that you should use to get your free key.

I installed PocketTV Classic (free), but it asks me to purchase a key!

You do not need to purchase a key if you use PocketTV Classic for personal use only. But you need to register it.

Once you have registered PocketTV Classic, it will ask you ONCE if you want to purchase it (you must purchase PocketTV unless you use it only for personal use). Just tap 'ok' or select 'Done' or 'Later' to pass this screen.

Normally, once PocketTV Classic is registered, it will not ask you again to purchase it, unless there is something corrupted in the Registry.

If you registered PocketTV Classic and it always asks you to purchase it everytime you start it, please read this other FAQ article which explains how to solve the problem.

I had to re-install PocketTV Classic: My key does not work anymore!

After getting a replacement unit, doing a hard-reset or after letting your battery run completely empty, you need to re-install PocketTV Classic. When this happens, a new (different) code may be displayed by PocketTV.

If that is the case, you just need to get a new key. Just go to the web page indicated on the PocketTV screen to get your new key.

  • If you were using a free key:

Go to http://www.pockettv.com/register and fill-up the form to get your new free key.

Make sure that you enter the code that PocketTV displays when you select Register in the Menu. If there is no Register in the Menu, the software is already registered and you don't need a new key.

  • If you have purchased PocketTV:

Please refer to the PocketTV Enterprise Edition section in this FAQ.

I cannot get a key, it says my PocketTV is too old!

Just go to the PocketTV Download Area and download and install the latest version of PocketTV.

Please read the Instructions for upgrading PocketTV.

If you have purchased PocketTV Enterprise Edition, you should download the latest 'Trial' version (free download). Once you enter the key you purchased (with Purchase in the PocketTV menu) it will become the full version.

If you are using PocketTV Classic, please read this FAQ article explaining how to obtain your free key.

If you are using PocketTV Enterprise Edition, please read this FAQ article explaining how to obtain the key you purchased.

My key does not work!

That may be because you have entered the key incorrectly, or because you have entered in the wrong dialog.

First, check that you enter the key in the correct dialog. For purchased keys, enter the key in the dialog that PocketTV displays when you select Purchase in the menu. For free registration keys, enter the key in the dialog that PocketTV displays when you select Register in the menu.

If the PocketTV dialog is correct and the code displayed by PocketTV in the dialog is the same as the one in the email you received with the key, check for typos:

A typical mistake is to typethe letter l instead of the digit 1, or the letter O instead of the digit 0.

The key is hexadecimal, i.e. it can contain only digits from 0 to 9 and lettersa, b, c, d, e or f (no other letter is possible in the key).

Example:The 2nd character is the digit 0, not the letter O and 6th character is the digit 1, not the letter l !!!

Registered PocketTV Classic tells me that I need to purchase! (after one week)

This problem can occur when something got wrong or corrupted in the Registry. In that case, the solution is:
  1. Install the latest version of PocketTV Classic from thePocketTV Download Area. .
  2. Soft reset the device by pressing the reset button.
  3. On the device, delete the Registry key [HK_CURRENT_USER]SoftwareMpegTV

You can do that with PHM Registry Editor (free).

  4. Run PocketTV Classic again and re-register. Make sure to use the code that PocketTV displays when you select Register in the menu.
This was reported to solve the problem.

I have an arabic i-Mate Smartphone, I have problems reading the code!

This problem occurs only on some i-Mate phones when the language is set to English (with Arabic support). It is caused by a problem with incorrect scaling of some fonts in the i-Mate.

To work around the problem, you just need to disable (temporarily) the Arabic support. Then you will be able to read the entire code and register PocketTV. Once you have registered PocketTV, change the phone back to English (with Arabic support).

To disable Arabic support on the i-Mate:

  1. Select Programs (or Start) from the Home screen.
  2. Select Settings from the Programs list.
  3. Scroll down to second Settings page and choose Regional Settings.
  4. Change the Language to English (no Arabic Support).
  5. Then reboot your telephone (i.e. turn the phone OFF, then ON).
To restore Arabic support again, follow the same steps and choose English (with Arabic support)

Cannot install: 'MpegTV PocketTV does not support the connected device type...'

This message appears when you try to install the Windows Mobile 5 or 6 version of PocketTV on an older device based on an earlier version of Windows Mobile (e.g. 2003 SE, 2003, 2002 or 2000).

Make sure to select the correct version of PocketTV in the download section.

PocketTV Pro is not a valid Pocket PC application!

This error message occurs after you installed a bogus version of the YanCEyWare Reader, a Bible reader from www.yanceyware.com.

YanCEyWare Reader version prior to 2.12 incorrectly install a bad gx.dll file in the Windows folder that overwrites the correct gx.dll which is in the ROM. This causes most video applications and games to break. Maybe God is just trying to tell you: Thou shalt not play games or watch video!

If you have the problem, please contact YanCEyWare customer support.

I have problems installing PocketTV from the Setup file!

This may be caused by problems with your ActiveSync configuration. But do not panic, there is a solution:

You can install PocketTV from a CAB file. The PocketTV CAB files can be downloaded from the PocketTV CAB Files Repository. Just move the mouse pointer over each link, you should see the full-name of the CAB file at the bottom of the browser window.

  • Smartphone:

Download the right CAB file for your Smartphone and copy it in the IPSMWindowsStart MenuAccessories folder on your Smartphone (e.g. using the Explore tab of ActiveSync). On Smartphone 2003, IPSM is called Storage. Then go in Home > Start/Programs > Accessories and open the CAB file. It will install PocketTV.

  • Pocket PC or Handheld PC:

Download the right CAB file for your device, copy it in the My Documents folder on your device (e.g. using the Explore tab of ActiveSync) and open it from the device using File Explorer. It will install PocketTV.

  • Palm-size PC: copy the CAB file in the WindowsStart Menu folder and open it from the Start menu.

File is improperly linked with alignment less than 0x1000...

If you try to run PocketTV.exe on your PC, you will get the following message:File is improperly linked with alignment less than 0x1000. Fix the error and then link it again.

PocketTV does not have an automatic installer for some legacy devices. You cannot run PocketTV.exe on your PC: you must install it manually.

Once you have downloaded PocketTV.exeon your PC, you must copy it to your device manually using ActiveSync. Please follow our detailed Installation Instructions.

Cannot find a compatible device...

You get this message if you are trying to install a version ofPocketTV on a device which is not the intended type device (e.g. installing the Smartphone version of PocketTV on a Pocket PC won't work).

You should goback to the download section and selectthe right version of PocketTV for your device.

Can't find PocketTV.exe (or one of its components)

You have installed the Pocket PC version on an older device which is NOT Pocket PC.Pocket PC is always running WinCE 3.0 or better.

Check the version of WinCE on your device and download the correct version of PocketTV.

To determine the processor type and WinCE Version:

  • On Pocket PC, open Start, Settings, tap the System tab andtap the About icon to see the processor type and Windows CE version.
  • On older devices, depending on the version of Windows CE, select Start,Settings, System, or select Start, System. The processor type and Windows CE version arelocated on the General or Device tab page.

PocketTV does not work!

First, check out the list of unsupported platforms. If you have one of those, you are out of luck.

If your platform is not listed as unsupported, are you positively certain that you have downloaded the right version for your device ?For example, H/PC Pro version will probably not work on a P/PC. Go back tothe download section and double check. Check that you have enough Program memory to run PocketTV. Click here to check and adjust your Program memory.

If PocketTV still does not work, please report the problem.

What are the System Requirements for PocketTV ?

  • Platforms: PocketTV works on all Microsoft Windows® Powered Pocket PC, Smartphone, Handheld PC Pro, Handheld PC 2000 devices and Pocket Manager (Casio BE-300, BE-500 l'agenda).

PocketTV is designed for color-display but it might also work with grey-level display. There are some known problems with iPaq 3100 series (Landscape mode does not work).

PocketTV should also work on all legacy WinCE devices except: SH3 HPC WinCE 2.0 systems, Sharp Mobilon HC-4500G/HC-4600 (WinCE 2.0), Compaq 2010c/2015c (WinCE 2.0). If you have one of those, try PocketTV at your own risks!

  • Display: You need at least 16 gray levels but 65,536 color is recommended. With 256 color, you need palette support (won't work on devices that support only the system palette, like the Compaq aero 8000). PocketTV has an advanced Dither option that produces unsurpassed image quality even on devices with only 4,096 colors (e.g. iPaq 3600 series, Jornada 540 series).
  • Audio:To get audio, you need audio support plus speakers or headphones. Stereo support recommended.
  • Memory: You need about 500K of storage memory to install PocketTV, plus at least 3MB of available Program Memory to run it. You need of course additional storage memory for your MPEG files.

Do I have enough Program memory ?

On Smartphone, you always have enough Program memory! That's because on Smartphones, Program memory (RAM) is only used to run applications, it is not used to store data or to install programs.

You need at least 3MB of available Program memory. On a Pocket PC, to increase the amount of available Program memory, go to Setup, System, Memory and move the slider toward the left. Under Program memory, look at the difference total and in use. The difference (i.e. available Program memory) should be at least 3MB.

If you don't have enough of Program memory to play video, only audio will play.If you have very little Program memory available, PocketTV will notwork at all or will hang (in which case you must Reset your device).

Start Menu moved to the center of the screen after I install PocketTV!

The Pocket PC Start Menu always shifts to the right when you have 9 or more programs showing in the menu. Whenthe menu becomes as tall as the screen itself, it is shiftedto the right, presumably to not obscur the word Start in the Navigation Bar.

To bring it back to the left side, just remove one or more items from the Start Menu.

To do that, go to Settings > Personnal > Menus to select what programs you want to appear in the Start Menu. Programs not listed in the Start Menu will be available through Start Menu > Programs.

What does it mean to 'application-unlock' a Smartphone ?

Why is your Smartphone 'application-locked' and what does that mean? Most Smartphones are application-locked by default to guarantee that your personal data is safe and secure. Only applications digitally 'signed' with a trusted certificate are allowed to run on application-unlocked phones. If a signed application compromises the privacy of your personal data or causes the phone to malfunction, the wireless carrier (e.g. Orange) will revoque (i.e. cancel) its certificate. Rogue or unsafe applications and viruses will not be allowed to run on a application-unlocked (i.e. secure) Smartphone.

When you application-unlock your Smartphone, you disable this safety system. Application-unlocked Smartphones will run any applications including possibly unsafe ones that are not signed or that are signed with a revoqued certificate. Unsafe applications and viruses can cause your Smartphone to malfunction or compromise the security and privacy of your personal data.

Why do most freeware and games only run on application-unlocked Smartphones? That's because developers are required to pay significant fees in order to get the digital signatures that allow their applications to run on application-unlocked (i.e. secured) Smartphones. Most independent game and freeware developers cannot afford to pay those signature fees. Also, code signature requires that developers have a real registered company/business. Many independent game and freeware developers don't have one.

What is the difference between application-locked and SIM-locked? A SIM-locked Smartphone will only accept SIM-cards from a certain wireless carrier. This has nothing to do with whether the Smartphone is application-locked or not.

Application-unlock your Smartphone at your own risks, knowing that you will have a lesser security.

There are various ways to application-unlock a Smartphone, depending on the model. Try:

  • Activer / Désactiver la sécurité du mobile SPV (i.e. the same in french)
  • Mio 8380 page with Unlocking Service (in chinese)
  • Mio 8380 Unlocking Service (in english)
  • Or try this Unlock/de-certification guide from coolsmartphone.com.

How can I download MPEG files from the net ?

Use the right mouse button when clicking on the link to the MPEG file, and select Save Target as... or Save Link as... in the pop-up menu.

Some versions of Internet Explorer have a bug that changes the file extension from .mpg to .mpeg when you download an MPEG file and save it to disk. If this happens, you might have to change the file extension back to .mpg at the time you save the file, before transfering the file to the device (older versions PocketTV will list only the files with the .mpg extension - newer versions can handle both .mpg and .mpeg). To check the extensions of files that you already have on your PC hard disk, open any folder, select the Tools menu, select Folder Options, select the View tab, un-check Hide file extensions for known file types.

Then, once the .mpg file is on your desktop, you must copy it into your device or to a Storage Card.

How can I copy MPEG files into my device or Storage Card ?

UpdateOnce you have MPEG files on your desktop, you must copy them into your device or into a Storage Card. Here are the detailed instructions, in case you have never done that.

Important: If have downloaded video from the net, they may not be in MPEG format or may have been encoded with parameters not optimum for PocketTV. In that case, we recommend that you use our Simple Guide for making MPEG files optimized for Pocket PC or Smartphone. Use Pocket PC or Smartphone templates, depending on the device you have.

Open ActiveSync and make sure that your device is connected.

  • Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 5, 2003 or 2002:

In ActiveSync, click on Explore. The window called Mobile Device shows the document filescurrently located in your devide. To add an MPEG file, just drag it in there. To remove a file, select it, click on the right button and choose Delete in the pop-up menu. You can also remove files from the device using Pocket File Explorer: tap-and-hold the file name and select Delete.

To copy the file on a Storage Card which is currently in your device, open My Pocket PC (located in the Mobile Device window), then open Storage Card and drag the MPEG file in there. If your Storage Card contains a folder called My Documents, you should place the MPEG file in this folder.

The fastest and most convenient way to copy files from the PC to a Storage Card is by using a Storage Card Reader that plugs into a USB port on your PC (e.g. SanDisk ImageMate CF Reader USB). Those are inexpensive and widely available peripherals. If you have a laptop, all you need is a PCMCIA/CF adapter (even cheaper).

  • Pocket PC 2000:

In ActiveSync, click on Explore. The window called Mobile Device shows the document filescurrently located in your devide. To add an MPEG file, just drag it in there. To remove a file, select it, click on the right button and choose Delete in the pop-up menu. You can also remove files from the device using Pocket File Explorer: tap-and-hold the file name and select Delete.

To copy the file on a Storage Card, you must create a folder called My Documents in the Storage Card and place the MPEG files in the My Documents folder: With ActiveSync, open My Pocket PC (located in the Mobile Device window), then open Storage Card. Make sure that there is a folder called My Documents in the Storage Card. If not, create it. Open My Documents, and drag the MPEG file in there.

Those are inexpensive and widely available peripherals. If you have a laptop, all you need is a PCMCIA/CF adapter (even cheaper).

  • Smartphone:

On Smartphone, you should store all your MPEG files on a Storage Card, because the permanent storage on the Smartphone (called IPSM or Storage) is limited and should be reserved to install applications, and the RAM is only for running applications and it is erased when you turn your phone OFF.

In ActiveSync, click on Explore. The window called Mobile Device shows the document filescurrently located in your devide. Make sure there is a Storage Card in your Smartphone. Open Mobile Device then open the Storage Card. To copy an MPEG file to your Storage Card, just drag it in there. To remove a file from the Storage Card, select it, click on the right button and choose Delete in the pop-up menu. You can also delete files using the PocketTV File Selector menu.

  • Casio Pocket Manager (BE-300 and BE-500 l'agenda):

Due to the limited amount of storage memory in those devices, you should store all your MPEG files in a Storage Card. The fastest and most convenient way to copy files from the PC to a Storage Card is by using a Storage Card Reader that plugs into a USB port on your PC (e.g. SanDisk ImageMate CF Reader USB). How can I delete an MPEG file from my device or Storage Card ?

  • Pocket PC:

To delete a file from your Pocket PC, use the File Explorer application.

Start the File Explorer (in Programs), go to the folder containing your file (usually 'My Documents'), then tap-and-hold the file name and select 'Delete' in the pop-up menu.

Note: there is no Recycle Bin on the Pocket PC: Once a file is deleted, it's gone...

  • Smartphone:

To delete a file from your Smartphone, use the Delete command in the PocketTV File Selector.

  • With the Explore feature of ActiveSync:

If your device is connected to your desktop, you can also use the Explore feature of ActiveSync to delete files from your device or from its Storage Card.

  • Remark:

You can get an 'Access denied' error if you try to delete or rename a the file that is currently used by an application. In that case you need to exit/terminate/kill the application or reset your device. To reset a Pocket PC, press the small Reset button. To reset the Smartphone, power the device OFF then ON again.

PocketTV can't see MPEG files on the Storage Card!

V Gear Pockettv Driver
There are two solutions to this problem on Pocket PC:
  • Place all your MPEG files in a top-level folder called My Documents on the Storage Card. If this folder does not exist, you must create it (using the Explore feature of ActiveSync or using Pocket File Explorer).

MPEG files can be organized in sub-folders, as long as the sub-folders are inside the folder My Documents.

If it still does not work, check carefully that the name of the folder that you have created is exactly 'My Documents', not 'My Documents' or 'My Documents '. There should be only ONE space after My, and no trailing space! Any extra space in the name would cause the folder to be unrecognized.

The reason for this ennoying problem is that Microsoft's standard 'Open File' dialog only shows the files located in the top-level folder 'My Documents' and in its sub-folders (one level only), in the main memory and in the CF Storage Card. Microsoft calls that a design feature, we call that a bug. Complaints about this problem (which also affects Microsoft's own Media Player, by the way) should be redirected to Microsoft.

Note: If you have a non-English device, the name of the folder may be different (e.g. French: 'Mes Documents').

  • PocketTV now provide an option to use the tGetFile dialog to open MPEG files. Just select the Use tGetFile in the Files options, and PocketTV will let you open MPEG files located anywhere on your device or Storage Card!

I want MPEG files to be played by PocketTV rather than by TCPMP / BetaPlayer / PocketMVP / PocketDivX!

Use the 'File Associations...' option (in Tools>Options>Files). This option checks the current file associations. If it detects that some file types normally associated with PocketTV are associated with some other application (e.g. PocketDivX), PocketTV offers to restore the default PocketTV file associations, so that MPEG files opened from the File Explorer will be played with PocketTV.

PocketTV can play CMF files but I get no audio, why ?

PocketTV can only play MPEG-1 files (.mpg), it cannot play CMF files.

CMF (Casio Media Format, also known as Casio-PEG or cpeg) is a format proprietary to Casio. The video part of CMF files happens to be based on MPEG, which is why you see the video part when you play a CMF file with PocketTV.But the audio part of CMF files is coded in a proprietary format (unfortunately), that only Casio-Soft's Mobile Video Player can decode. Mobile Video Player is of course available only for Casio devices.

Now that PocketTV is available (and free), there is no advantage to using CMF rather than the open, non-proprietary and more efficient MPEG-1 format. CMF is 'dead'!

How can I get smoother video on my device ?

If your MPEG files do not play very well on your device, it is probably because those files do not use parameters optimized for the device. MPEG files downloaded from the internet usually have a very high bitrate and sometimes a resolution too large for Pocket PC's and Smartphones.

You can easiely re-encode your MPEG files with parameters that are optimized for your device. Check the Simple Guide for making MPEG files optimized for Pocket PC or Smartphone. The tools are free and our guide include pre-defined templates with optimized parameters.

Although we do not recommend it, you can also overclock your device:

If your device is an Xscale-based Pocket PC, try Pocket Hack MasterDriver.

If your device is an ARM-based Pocket PC, you can use the free JS Overclock utility from Jimmy Software. It may be able to run your ARM-based device (e.g. iPaq) up to 236 MHz (normal speed is 206 MHz).

Although this is not documented, the JS Overclock utility also works on the Jornada 720, but only up to 221 MHz (if you set it to 236 MHz, audio ceases to work).

Remember that the battery will drain faster when you increase the clock speed. Some devices may become unstable when overclocked. Always do a full backup before overclocking your device.

Use those overclocking utilities at your own risks!

Audio does not work!

The Welcome to PocketTV file does not have audio. Try playing an MPEG file that has some audio. We have some demo MPEG files with audio here.

Audio works but there is no video, why ?

You don't have enough Program memory. Click here to check and adjust your Program memory.

Stereo doesn't work on my Jornada 820

There seems to be a bug in the audio driver on the Jornada 820. Use Mono (left or right) audio setting.

Note: You need PocketTV version 0.4.11 or later. Earlier versions of PocketTV did not work on ARM Handheld PC's.

What is MPEG ?

MPEG stands for...
Moving Picture Experts Group
MPEG is a familly of open, non-proprietary, non encrypted formats for audio and video. The MPEG formats are defined by ISO, the International Standards Organisation.

MPEG-1 is the simplest of the MPEG formats, and it is well adapted for computer displays. MPEG-1 is the only video format truely compatible between all computer types (Windows, Mac, Linux etc), and it is also one of the most efficients: files are smaller for the same quality.

MPEG is to video
what MP3 is to music!
Like MP3, MPEG-1 movie files are highly compressed: a 1GB Storage Card can store more than 20 hours of video (with audio!).

You can check the following sites for more information on MPEG:

If you have video files coded in various proprietary video formats (AVI's, MOV's, VCD's, DVD's), it is easy to convert then in standard MPEG format.

What is the problem with the NEC / Packard Bell Pocket Gear 2030 ?

Some NEC / Packard Bell Pocket Gear 2030 units are shipped with a faulty ROMV gear pockettv drivers which prevent PocketTV and other applications from functionning correctly.

When running PocketTV on a device that has the faulty ROM, you will get the following message:

Fatal Application Error.
Application PocketTV.eve has performed an illegal operation and will beshut down.
You can check the ROM version by doing a soft reset (press the reset button). When you reset the device, the ROM version displayed should be SQWWER18 or higher. If you see a lower version number, you have an incorrect ROM and some applications will not work.

The faulty ROM prevents the routine KernelIoControl(IOCTL_HAL_GET_DEVICEID, ...) from working properly. This routine is used by all applications that need to access the unique device ID number (this includes PocketTV and other applications, especially those using security, encryption and digital right management).

Please contact NEC / Packard Bell customer support and request a ROM Upgrade.

What is the problem with the Casio E-200 ?

Some Casio E-200 are shipped with a faulty system file in their ROM which can cause your device to crash and loose all its memory content

, especially when using games and video applications.

Casio provides a software update that corrects the problem. If you have a E-200, it is strongly recommended that you download and install this update.

You can download the E-200 update from the following Casio pages:

  • Casio USA Download Page.
  • Casio Europe Download Page.

The E-200 update is called 'E-200-Pocket TV Fix' or 'CASSIOPEIA Pocket PC 2002 Update File Version 1.00'. The file to download is a zip archive called PPC2002updt100.zip.

To open zip archives, you can use WinZip, StuffIt Expander or ExtractNow.

Installation of the E-200 update: First you should make a complete backup (just in case something goes wrong). Then you should follow the installation instructions from Casio (see readme.txt in the zip archive).

When installing the update on your E-200, you may be asked if you want to replace the system file ddi.dll. You must answer Yes.

VERY IMPORTANT!: You MUST reset your E-200 IMMEDIATELY after installing this update (i.e. while the device is STILL in the cradle).

PocketTV will run significantly faster when the E-200 update is installed.

What is the problem with the Mitac Mio 8380 ?

Some Mitac Mio 8380 are shipped with a faulty firmware which can prevent some applications from installing, or cause them to malfunction.

You can correct the problem by installing the unlock patch provided by Mitac (available soon) on their Mio website:

  • Mio 8380 page (in chinese)
  • Mio 8380 page (in english).
  • Mio 8380 Unlocking Service (in english, available soon)

If you had installed PocketTV before installing this Mio patch, start PocketTV and select Menu > More > Files > File Associations, then click OK. This will correct the PocketTV registry settings.

What is the problem with the Mitac Mio 8390 ?

The Mitac Mio 8390 is shipped with a faulty firmware which causes most games and video applications (including PocketTV) to malfunction.

You can solve the problem by using one of the following two methods:

  • GAPI to GDI wrapper

This method is easy to install, but PocketTV will not perform very efficiently with this method, and 'Fast Video', if it is available, it will not be any faster (PocketTV will always use GDI).

  • GAPI Signing Pack

This method is a little bit more complicated but there is a nice tutorial in the package that explains all the steps involved. Games and Video applications (including PocketTV) will work perfectly once signed by this method. Once signature has been performed, select 'PocketTV Menu > Options > Settings > Fast Video' for optimum performances.

For PocketTV Classic, you do not need to sign PocketTV.exe and tGetFile.dll, they are already signed as needed.

For PocketTV Enterprise Edition, you must sign both PocketTV Pro.exe and tGetFile.dll, located in the folder Program FilesPocketTV Pro on the device.

Can I control PocketTV with the hardware buttons ?

Yes, you can control the most common functions with the D-pad buttons (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, OK/Action) and other buttons.

The default mapping of hardware buttons depends on the device.

On Pocket PC:

  • OK/Action = Toggle between Nominal Size and Fit Screen
  • UP = Volume up
  • DOWN = Volume down
  • RIGHT = Play / Pause seek forward
  • LEFT = Rewind (only when Paused, to prevent accidental rewind)
On Smartphone:
  • OK/Action = Turn Fullscreen on/off
  • UP = Volume up
  • DOWN = Volume down
  • RIGHT = Seek forward
  • LEFT = Seek backward
The D-pad buttons are properly rotated when playing Fullscreen or when the display is rotated.

On Handheld PC, use the UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT cursor keys on the keyboard.

PocketTV 0.6.6 and later versions have an option to customize hardware button mapping.

Is PocketTV compatible with JS Landscape ?

Yes, PocketTV version 0.4.7 and later is compatible with the popular JS Landscape

V Gear Pockettv Drivers

from Jimmy Software on the iPaq and Cassiopeia. PocketTV's Fullscreen mode works well in conjunction with JS Lanscape and JS Lanscape 2.0.

If you have an older version of PocketTV, just install the latest version (it is free). Check Release Notes for the latest version available.

The only minor problem still there is that PocketTV Fullscreen/landscape mode currently works with only one landscape orientation, while JS Lanscape 2.0 supports both orientations. So in some cases you'll have to rotate your device 180 degres to watch fullscreen video if you are using the other orientation with the JS Landscape driver. We'll try to fix that some day!

What does the Dither option do ?

The Dither option enables a dithering algorithm that improves significantly the image quality, particularly on devices like iPaq 3600 series or Jornada 540 series that have only 4096 colors (12-bit). There is virtually no performance loss caused by the Dither option, so you should normally keep it selected all the time, especially with the iPaq.

What does the Microdrive option do ?

The Microdrive option reduces significantly the power used when playing MPEG files from an IBM Microdrive but it also allocates larger cache memory buffers. You should set this option only to play from a Microdrive on battery power. Set this option before opening the file.

When will you have PocketTV for SH3 H/PC WinCE 2.0 ?

Never. PocketTV is not available for SH3 H/PC WinCE 2.0 devices, sorry. No, we have no plans to support those old SH3 H/PC WinCE 2.0 devices in the future.
