John Deere 40 Serial Numbers
Locate your John Deere Product Identification Number Finding your model number and serial number is as easy as locating the identification tag on your machine.
Here are the serial numbers for the various styles of John Deere 40 tractors. Please note there are two sets of numbers. One set indicates the calendar break of the serial numbers - tractors built from January 1 to December 31 of that year. The other set indicates the model year breaks of the serial numbers - tractors built from August 1 to roughly July 15 of the following year.

- Mar 07, 2020 Stand behind your John Deere lawn tractor and look to the bottom left hand corner near the left tire to locate the identification tag. This metal plate attached to the frame of the mower provides you with the tractor's model and serial number. Tags may be located under the hood or along the front on older models.
Similar to the way cars are built, the model year of the tractor was usually introduced prior to the calendar year. So a 40 built in October 1954 is really a 1955 model.

Finding the Model and Serial Numbers on a John Deere Riding Mower
Where Is John Deere Serial Number Located
As you can see above, one of the best places to find the location of the model and serial number on your John Deere riding mower is to stand behind it. Lean down and look just to the right of the left tire. One of the most common locations is on the lower part of the frame. Please use the gray arrows above as a reference.
